God’s Unfailing Love: What it Means to Love Unconditionally

This week on the blog, we will be talking about God’s unfailing love. As a little girl, I always dreamed of one day meeting my prince charming and falling in love. Fate would have that we meet on a long-distance flight, sparks would fly and we would realize that we just couldn’t live without each other. We would pursue a relationship, he would eventually propose in Paris and I would finally have that Cinderella dream wedding. And as the story goes, we would live happily ever after. That’s how Hollywood promotes it right? First a story book romance then a lavish castle wedding followed by a lifetime of happily ever after.

We all yearn for love and want to be loved. As mere kids, we are told the story of Cinderella. We grow up dreaming of finding prince charming that will sweep us off our feet and we fantasize about our wedding day. Guys on the other hand look forward to rescuing that damsel in distress.

We go through extraordinary steps to find what we deem as “the one.” For some, they look to reality TV to find love. Bachelor Nation saw Rachel Lindsay find her forever in the season finale of The Bachelorette (2017). I am an avid fan of the show and I have nothing but best wishes for the couple, but the shows track record speaks for itself. Others leave it up to experts to find love as depicted in the series, Married at First Sight. We all yearn for this thing called love but do we truly understand what it means to love?

As I drove to work a few weeks ago. I heard the host on a local radio station relate a caller’s story. Our caller in question decided to place an ad online for a wedding date, candidates would be a plus if they had a baby she could pass off as their own. Sure enough, she had a taker, fast forward 3 years later, they are happily married. This sounds like a fairy-tale, right? Love emerged from an unlikely situation. The media bombards us with this idea of love and we buy into it. We all want that fairy tale romance. For some of us, I think we are stuck on the mere idea and not so much what it really means to love.

We have the perfect example of God’s unfailing love in the bible. In 1 John 3:1, it says, “Behold what manner of love the father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the children of God.” God sent his only son to redeem us. Think about it, the King of Kings left his throne. He denounced his divinity and took on humanity to save fallen man. He left his lavish mansion, to be born in a stable. Instead of the red-carpet adornments you would expect for royalty, he was mocked and he was beaten. Jesus selflessly died on a cross. He did it for you and he did it for me, that we may have eternal life if we only believe in him as outlined in John 3:16. To me, that’s real love, being selfless, putting the other person first before your own desires. Love is more than just a feeling that you feel when you feel a feeling that you have never felt before. It goes way deeper than that.
