We’ve all been there—setting goals that we’re super excited about in January, only to forget about them by February. But what if we approached our goals a little differently?

What if, instead of just aiming for success in the usual areas—like fitness or finances—we focused on our spiritual growth? Imagine setting goals that help you grow closer to God, deepen your faith, and make a real difference in your daily life.

Setting faith-centered goals isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Here’s a simple, practical guide to help you set goals that align with your faith and bring real change.

Setting Faith Goals

Align your dreams with God’s purpose, focusing on what matters most in light of your faith.

Start With Reflection: Where Are You Right Now?

Before you jump into any goal-setting, it’s helpful to take a step back and reflect. Ask yourself: Where am I in my faith right now?

Are there areas where you feel disconnected, or maybe areas where you want to grow more? This is where real growth begins: in the honest recognition of where you are.

Try these questions to get started:
– What’s my spiritual life like right now? Is there something I feel called to grow in?
– Am I intentionally making time for God in my daily life, or am I just going through the motions?
– What habits or distractions are keeping me from focusing on what really matters?

Often, we don’t realize where we’re stuck until we stop and really think about it. Reflection gives you a fresh perspective—and might reveal a goal you didn’t even know you had!

Make Your Goals SMART (but with a Faith Twist)

You’ve probably heard of SMART goals before (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), but let’s give this a faith-based spin. The idea is to set goals that actually reflect your spiritual values and help you grow, not just “get things done.”

Here’s how to make your goals more spiritually motivated:

S (Spiritually Motivated): Make sure the goal aligns with your faith. For example, instead of just wanting to “read more,” aim to read Scripture every day or spend more time in prayer. Ask yourself, How does this goal honor God?


M (Measurable): Make your goals easy to track. If your goal is to pray more, set a measurable target: “I’ll pray for 10 minutes each morning.” This gives you something to measure.


A (Achievable): Be realistic. Don’t set yourself up for failure by aiming for a goal that’s too big. If you’re new to prayer, starting with 10 minutes is a lot more achievable than trying to pray for an hour every day right off the bat.


R (Relevant): Does this goal truly matter to your spiritual life? Does it align with where you want to grow in your faith? It should connect to what God is calling you to do.
T (Time-bound): Give your goal a time frame—like, “I will pray for 10 minutes every morning for the next month.” Time limits help keep you focused and committed.

When you realize that goal-setting can be just as much about intentions as it is about actions, everything starts to click. You’re not just “checking things off”; you’re building habits that align with your faith.

Break It Down Into Bite-Sized Steps

If you’re anything like me, a huge goal can feel overwhelming. So, break it down. If your big goal is to grow closer to God or strengthen your prayer life, that’s great—but what does that actually look like day-to-day? Let’s make it concrete.

For example, if your goal is to deepen your prayer life, here’s how you can break it down:

Week 1: Set aside 10 minutes each morning to pray.

Week 4: Commit to praying the Psalms or another scripture-based prayer each morning.

This way, instead of feeling overwhelmed by a huge goal, you have a clear path forward. Each week is a small step that leads to bigger growth.

Small, daily actions add up faster than we realize. It’s like when you’re working out—just showing up every day makes a huge difference over time!

Incorporate Scripture into Your Goals

Scripture isn’t just for church—it’s a powerful tool to help you stay focused on your goals. When you’re setting goals, try connecting them to verses that inspire you or speak to the area you’re working on.

This can serve as a reminder of God’s promises and a source of strength when things get tough.

For instance, if you want to grow in patience, a good verse to meditate on might be James 5:7-8: “Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.” Keep it somewhere visible—like on your phone lock screen or written in your planner.

When you tie your goals to God’s word, they’re not just about you and your willpower—they’re about God’s power working in you. That’s a game-changer.

Pray Over Your Goals

One of the most powerful things you can do for your faith-centered goals is to pray over them. Ask God for wisdom, strength, and guidance. Pray for clarity and for the ability to follow through.

Prayer isn’t just the “final step” in goal-setting; it’s part of the whole process. When we invite God into our goals, we’re acknowledging that He’s the one who will help us grow.

Maybe you’ve prayed every morning for a week—celebrate that! Maybe you’ve found yourself more patient with others—thank God for that growth! Celebrating the progress, no matter how small, helps you stay encouraged.

The joy of growth is just as important as the achievement itself. When we celebrate the journey, we remember that the process is just as meaningful as the end goal.

This is His Year

Setting faith-centered goals isn’t about being perfect or ticking off a list of tasks. It’s about becoming more intentional with how we live out our faith.

When our goals align with our spiritual lives, we start to see real transformation—both in ourselves and in the world around us.
