What Does it Really Mean to be Covered by the Blood of Jesus?

What Does Covered By The Blood of Jesus Mean?
If you are not a familiar with the language of Christians, this phrase may seem a bit bizarre. Why would you want to be covered by the blood of Jesus? What does it mean to be covered by the blood? Which blood are you being covered with? How do you get this blood? Well, lets start from the beginning.
“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” 1 John 3:4 KJV
According to 1 John 3:4, sin is the transgression of the law. In the garden of Eden, God made a law, a rule which said that they should not eat from a particular tree. When Adam and Eve chose to disobey God by eating the fruit from the tree, God had told them not to eat of, they committed what is known as sin.
The wages of sin is death as stated in Romans 6:23. So, when the first humans sinned, a payment for sin was required. The Bible does not explicitly state it however, in Genesis 3: 21 it says that God clothed Adam and Eve in coats of skin. Where would coats of skin come from? Skin had to come from an animal, so an animal had to be killed to provide them with clothes.
Based on this scripture, the system of killing animals as the payment for sin started after Adam and Eve sinned. Hebrews 9:22 states that without the shedding of blood there is no remission for sin. So, blood is needed to cancel or forgive the sin.
Covered By The Blood of Jesus Meaning
This system of paying for sin with the blood of animals continued all throughout the bible for a long time. In Leviticus we find details of the types of animals to be sacrificed and the process involved. It is of particular note that the animal sacrificed had to be perfect and it had to be without blemish.
When Jesus came to the world to die, he became the perfect and final sacrifice. The blood of bulls and goats was not able to pay the price for sin once and for all (Hebrews 10:4). The animal sacrifices were therefore pointing to the ultimate sacrifice-Jesus. Hebrews 9:12 lets us know that Jesus has obtained eternal redemption for us. As a result of Jesus’ sacrifice we do not need to kill animals today and use their blood as payment for sin.
“And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. 2 And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. 4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.” Zechariah 3:1-4 KJV
When I studied this scripture, I had to shout hallelujah. The entire gospel and what it means to be covered by his blood is summarized here. Joshua is a high priest which means he is supposed to be among the holiest of humans yet he was still being condemned by Satan. Jesus however steps in. As a result of the shed blood of Jesus, all the accusations of the devil are cancelled. I am so glad that I am covered by the blood of Jesus!
Jesus’ blood takes away Joshua’s filthiness and instead clothes him in righteousness. In the same way the blood of animals was shed in the Garden of Eden and their skin used to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness, Jesus’ blood covers all our sin and now we are seen as righteous so the devil can no longer claim us as his own. This is what it means to be covered by the blood. It means Jesus has paid for our sins forever and so once we accept his sacrifice, we are given clean garments; all our sins are washed away.
Isn’t it wonderful to know that all the mistakes we have ever made, all the bad things we have ever done, we can bring to Jesus and ask him to take the filth and make us clean? Being covered by the blood of Jesus brings us peace and comfort in troubled times, and reminds us of the incredible sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf. So, let us always be mindful of the significance of this phrase and strive to live our lives in a way that reflects the love and grace of our Savior.
