20 Powerful Bible Verses About Friendships

bible verses about friendship

Looking for Bible verses about friendship? Women have a greater need for friendships than men do.  Our friendships run deeper.  Men like to “do things” with friends.  Women want to “know things” about each other.  We like to do things together too, like shopping, but we want to talk while we do it!

Girls are naturally drawn to each other.  A girl’s first experience with heartache may have been over a lost “best friend” rather than a “boy friend”.  When friendships are lost, women grieve.

We do not just grieve for the friendship, but also for the secrets shared, the trust given and the acceptance enjoyed.  If betrayed, the pain runs deep.  No one can cause you more harm than someone you have trusted in deeply.

Your best friend in school knows who you are afraid of and who you secretly like.  She knows you still keep your Barbies in your room and you cried for a week when Shaun Cassidy got married.

Most recall a time in school when a friend we trusted proved to have loose lips.  It cut like a knife and that is when it starts – the creation of the mask.

The “you” you are willing to let the world see. We hide behind our masks, thinking we are better off, but we lose so much.  If no one knows I’m struggling, I deny them the chance to minister to me and keep me accountable.  I lose the good advice of mature Christians, not to mention their prayers.

Friendships are an important part of life. They can provide support, love, and laughter. But sometimes friendships can be complicated and difficult. These Bible verses about friendship offer encouragement and guidance during tough times, you can also check out our previous post on Christian friendship quotes.

Bible Verses About Friendship

The Bible is full of verses about friendship. In the Old Testament, we see examples of friendship between Abraham and Lot, between David and Jonathan, and between Ruth and Naomi. In the New Testament, we see Jesus modeling friendship for us by becoming our friend (John 15:12-17).

The Bible tells us that true friends are those who stick closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24) and that it is a blessing to have a friend who will help us in our time of need (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). As we seek to follow Jesus, we can strive to be the type of friend that he was to us—a friend who is faithful, loyal, and committed.

We can also look to the example of Paul, who showed us what it looks like to love others well (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). As we seek to live out these biblical principles, we can be confident that God will use our friendships to further his kingdom purposes. Here are some of my favorite Bible Verses About Friendship, taken from the King James Version.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.  Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

Luke 6:31

“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”

James 4:4

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

Bible Verses About Friendship and Love

The Bible has a lot to say about friendship and love. In John 15:13, Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” This verse is a powerful reminder of the selfless love that true friends are capable of. The Bible also says in Proverbs 17:17, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” This verse speaks to the idea that true friends will stick by you no matter what. In times of trouble, a good friend will be there to support you.

Finally, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 talks about the different ways that love is expressed. These verses emphasize that love is not just a feeling but an action. True friends will go out of their way to show care and compassion for others. By living out these biblical principles, we can build friendships that are based on mutual respect and selfless love.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.”
