The Bible contains a wide range of passages that can make us feel uneasy.

In Leviticus 26:14-17, we find one particularly frightening passage. In this section, God warns His people about the consequences they will face if they disobey Him. The Lord proclaims that He will send “terrors and discomforts” among them and afflict them with “consumption, fever and evil eye” until they are utterly destroyed. In addition to this comprehensive list of horrific punishments, the passage also goes on to mention a curse for men who refuse to keep His commandments: their carcasses shall be food for scavenging birds and beasts.

In addition to these dire warnings against breaking God’s commands, there are several more verses throughout Scripture specifically designed to evoke fear in sinners. Deuteronomy 28:15-68 is an entire chapter devoted to listing all of the curses that will come upon those who violate God’s law; these include physical ailments like blindness, poverty and madness as well as spiritual punishments such as being cursed by day and night in every place imaginable. In Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 we find even more sobering words from Solomon declaring that after death comes judgment from our Creator; all things done on earth must be accounted for before an eternal audience–a thought sure to give any believer pause for reflection!
